An EU Risk Assessment on Trisodium Nitrilotriacetate or NTA concluded with regard to carcinogenicity that the effect must be assumed to be relevant for humans.

For many years most manufacturers of commercial dishwasher liquids have added NTA to their product. In layman’s terms NTA increases the efficacy of other chemicals.

A recently released report by the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety concluded that “the presence of NTA with a maximum use concentration of 5% in cosmetic products is not safe for the consumer”

See http://ec.europa.eu/health/scientific_committees/consumer_safety/docs/sccs_o_046.pdf

A small number of concerned manufacturers have now removed NTA completely from the manufacturing process, with no effect at all on the effectiveness of the product.

I spoke recently to one particular manufacture who told me that 2 years ago they used 750 tonnes of NTA this year they will use none. It seems pretty clear to me, before you buy the product, you need to ask the question “Does this product contain NTA?”
